Exploring Our World through iNaturalist

July 1, 3 – 4:30 p.m., Woodstock Land Conservancy Office (74 Mill Hill Rd.)

What is that tree or small plant in my yard? Is it beneficial for our pollinators?

Become an iNaturalist expert!

— The iNaturalist app, which you can install for free on your smartphone, will help you identify and learn about all the plants, animals, insects, and fungi you encounter. This training will enable our Woodstock Pollinator Pathway Community to open a wonderful window on to the natural world, and bring us into a larger community of naturalists.

— In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to use the iNaturalist app to practice plant, animal and fungi identification, while contributing to long-term monitoring efforts for seasonal changes. Discover the importance of community science and how it helps scientists track the impacts of our changing climate, habitat loss and more.

— The program will start off inside with an introduction to iNaturalist and how to setup and use the app as well as the website. Then we will head outside to learn how use it to identify species. Bring your smart device (phone or tablet) and come prepared for being both indoors and outdoors.

Your donation of $5 will help us defray the costs of this training.

Discover Native Bees and Exchange Native Seeds

April 25, 3 p.m., Thorn Preserve

Chris Layman, a Cornell Master Beekeeper and independent researcher, served as the guest speaker for WPP’s spring event. He spoke at the Catskills Center’s Thorn Preserve about the lives of the emerging native bees pollinating at the preserve. Chris explored bee ecology and the importance of the symbiotic relationship between bees and plants, especially in the riparian zone near the Sawkill Creek. Chris taught us how to provide nesting areas near our own gardens to support the native bee population.

Following Chris’ presentation, the WPP hosted our 4th annual Seed Exchange. Bring native seeds to exchange with others.

Refreshments were provided by Fox Farm Apiaries.
